According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, over a period of five years there were 53 reports of escalator footwear mishaps and Crocs were named in four injuries. The fact that Crocs has practically become a household word since their inception in 2002 is quite amazing. Crocs popularity might be part of the problem since they have sold 50 million pairs of shoes in five years. And yes, the knock-offs are getting caught in elevators too.

Shoe entrapment happens to young and old, to people wearing galoshes, rubber soles, and even stiletto heels. Escalators are powerful complex pieces of equipment with moving parts.

Hidden Dangers

"This is a hidden danger, not only in terms of the escalator equipment, but in the design of the shoes", said Philadelphia Lawyer Joel D. Feldman, Esquire and co-author of Elevator and Escalator Accident Litigation and Reconstruction, 2nd edition. "The soles of these shoes are sticky and thus easily can become stuck in equipment. Since they are made of a soft substance, they provide little protection from the power contained in the motors of an escalator. So, no slip is not always safe in terms of contact with escalators." Mr. Feldman is a shareholder at the Philadelphia Law Firm of Anapol Schwartz Weiss Cohan Feldman & Smalley. Lawsuits have been filed for slip & fall cases involving escalators.

Escalator Injury Rips off Child's Toe

For example, a 4-year-old boy got his foot caught in an escalator last month in a Virginia mall. His mother managed to yank him free, but the nail on his big toe was almost completely ripped off, causing heavy bleeding. Initially mom had no idea what caused the boy's foot to get caught. It was only later; when someone at the hospital remarked about the child's shoes - Crocs -- that she did an Internet search.

According to reports appearing across the United States and as far away as Singapore and Japan, shoe entrapments occur because of the shoe's flexibility and grip. Some report the shoes get caught in the teeth at the bottom or top of the escalator or in the crack between the steps and the side of the escalator.

The reports of serious injuries have all involved young children. Crocs are commonly worn by children as young as 2.

In Japan, the government warned consumers last week that it has received 39 reports of sandals - mostly Crocs or similar products - getting stuck in escalators from late August through early September. Most of the reports appear to have involved small children, some as young as two years old.

Kazuo Motoya of Japan's National Institute of Technology and Evaluation said children may have more escalator accidents in part because they bounce around when they stand on escalators, instead of watching where they place their feet. In Singapore, a 2-year-old girl wearing rubber clogs - (brand unknown) - had her big toe completely ripped off in an escalator accident.

At the Atlanta airport, a 3-year-old boy wearing Crocs suffered a deep gash across the top of his toes; one of seven shoe entrapments at the airport in less than nine months, and all but two involved Crocs.

As for escalator safety, you should always have your child stand right in the middle of the steps so if you're on the escalator with your child, your hold the railing and then you hold your child's hand and make sure the child is right in the middle, nowhere near the sides because that's where the accidents can happen.

And then when you get down to the bottom, make sure that you help your child get off.

During the past two years, shoe entrapments in the Washington Metro subway have gone from being relatively rare to happening four or five times a week in the summer, though none have caused serious injuries.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said escalator accidents caused more than 10,000 injuries last year, but the agency has few records of specific shoe problems. Only two shoe entrapments have been reported by consumers since the beginning of 2006. One reported in May involved rubber footwear.

They are, after all, too gorgeous to put back on the shelf. The remedy for that problem is the shoe stretcher. Now we shall delve more deeply into these mysterious, shoe saving devices.

In addition to maintaining the original shape and preventing creases and cracking, shoes trees absorb moisture from the lining of the shoes, which helps to prevent unwanted shoe odour. They look like something made by the late Spanish surrealist painter Salvador Dali who was known for his striking and bizarre images. They're very unstable and dangerous. At £330 a pair, they're also expensive. But fashionable women are bound to wear them.

That's what fashion experts say about Marc Jacobs's new line of shoes which could either make you stand out in the crowd or give you a bad case of arthritis.

"Whether you think it is a gimmick too far or a piece of fashion genius depends how far up the fashionista ladder you are - on a scale of one to crazy," reported Erin Kelley in the Daily Mail.

The "surreal shoes" are so named since their heels are located at the front instead of the back where they are traditionally found. Their unique design has prompted others to call the American designer mad.

"A chunky, four-inch heel nestles horizontally just under the ball of the foot. Where you'd expect a heel, there is nothing but fresh air. The center of gravity, therefore, is somewhere under the arch of the foot, forcing the whole body to tilt forward," Kelley said.

"The effort of staying upright in them will be the equivalent of an advanced level Pilates class. Relax, try to lean back on your heels, and you'll fall backwards. The must-have accessory to match the shoe then ought to be a crash helmet," she added.

The costly shoes got mixed reviews at New York's fashion week. Foot specialists, however, were not impressed and called the fancy footwear dangerous.

Doctors have long warned of the dangers of high heel shoes that were recently implicated in a number of hospital cases. Dr. Rupert Evans of the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff said he sees about half a dozen women on weekend evenings because of the shoes that cause sprain, broken bones, and dislocated ankles.

"High heels tend to be pointed and can cause bunions and hammer toes - as well as placing a strain on feet, ankles, knees and backs, he said. He added that the problem could be partly aggravated by a bit of drinking at summer parties," said the Daily Mail.

Choosing Athletic Shoes: Tips and Tricks

No matter what your sport is, your athletic shoes are one of the most important pieces of equipment. From tennis to running, basketball to soccer, choosing the right athletic shoes for the right reasons can make a huge difference in keeping your feet and body healthy. Below you will find some of the things you need to consider when choosing shoes for your sport.

Style Isn't Everything

Just about every day, someone asks me about their shoes. Questions vary from sport to sport, but the fact remains that the majority of people choose athletic shoes based on brand names and styles, rather than what is best for their own feet.

I know that it can be hard to pass up those awesome looking shoes that match your uniform perfectly, but in the long run, the most important thing is that the athletic shoe serves its function...to support and protect your feet. Lets take a closer look at what makes a good athletic shoe.

The Heel Box

When I explain shoes to my patients, I always start with the heel box. This is where most people are similiar in their needs. A sturdy heel box is essential to help control your rear-foot during athletic activities. The heel box is essentially the back third of the shoe, that surrounds your heel. Most athletic shoes have a heel box made up of leather, and some type of plastic or rubber re-inforcement. However, not all athletic shoes are created equal. To test the heel box, try bending it over, or squeezing it in, and see how much resistance you encounter. If you can easily fold over the heel box, then chances are you will not get much support.

The Upper

This is the area where most people make the mistake that causes injury. The "Upper" is the portion of the shoe that surrounds the foot. It is the upper portion of the shoe, from the heel box to the toe box. Uppers can be fashioned from all kinds of different materials, from mesh to leather, and other types of fabrics. Depending on your foot type, you may need more or less support from the upper.

This portion of the shoe helps to control the mid and forefoot. Too much motion in these areas will allow for excessive stress through the meta-tarsals and tarsals, and can result in stress fractures, tendonitis, and other problems. To determine what type of foot you have, grab ahold of your foot with both hands, and move it around. Try moving individual bones around...do you find lots of motion, with little resistance, or is your foot very rigid, with little movement. You don't have to be an expert to tell if you have a flexible or rigid foot. Your athletic shoe should be opposite of your foot type. For rigid feet, you can get by with mesh or other light materials for the upper, as you need less support for your foot. For a flexible foot, you should lean more toward a rigid upper, that will control excessive motion and reduce stress.

The Arch

Arch support is essential for good athletic shoes. Even people with good arches, or great feet mechanics should have sufficient arch support. But, arch support is more than just the arch. It is the way that the sole of the athletic shoe is created and constructed that determines the overall characteristics of the arch. And as far as those cushy insoles that they try to upsell you at the shoe store - pass on those as they just add comfort, not support.

When choosing shoes, look closely at the sole of the shoe. A good arch support will be evident by the shape of the shoe. Notice the outline of the sole. There should be a minimal amount of change in width between the toe and the heel. The wider the athletic shoe is at the middle (where your arch is), the more surface area there is to support your foot. So, avoid shoes that start out wide at the toe, narrow way down in the middle, and then flare out again at the heel.

Change is Good

Even the perfect athletic shoe will wear out over time. I have seen quite a few injuries due to old or worn out shoes. Just like any other equipment, you should monitor your shoes, and replace them when they wear out. If you are a runner, monitor your mileage, and replace them as appropriate.

How do you know when to buy new shoes? Well, holes, or pieces falling off are generally good indicators...But if it isn't that obvious, look for all of the qualities that you used to choose the athletic shoe in the first place. Is the heel box still sturdy? Is the upper as rigid as it needs to be to control your foot? Is the arch still in good shape, or have you worn down one side of the sole? Answer these questions, and inspect your shoes often to keep them protecting your feet.

Summary

Good athletic shoes don't have to be flashy, or expensive to serve their intended purpose. There are lots of shoes out there that will fit both your needs and your budget. Look for all of the right qualities to fit your foot, and you are sure to make a wise decision. And when in doubt? Discuss shoe wear with other athletes, and the sales person at the shoe store. Chances are they have some good insight.

Recently those that prefer cowboy boots are beginning to wear their jeans inside the boots. Again, this shows off the style of the boot.

Short boots can also make a statement. A shorter boot can be worn with a longer skirt. This combination can make a stylish statement just as much as the opposite. Shorter boots can be worn with slacks in the business place. Those that work in the city and choose to switch between tennis shoes and boots will have an easier time switching with short boots rather than long boots.

Shoes are the defining piece that creates a style. They make a statement and add function to fashion. They can make your feet feel like their floating in the clouds or they can put a punch line on a flashy number. Style is defined by every piece of the outfit including the shoes.

1. Work your way up. The higher the heel, the greater the challenge, so start with a pair of heels no more than two inches tall. Once you've mastered that pair, you try a higher heel.

2. Practice standing in heels. Before you take your first step, practice your balance by standing in heels. Experiment with different poses as you get used to the added height.

3. Improve your posture. Keep your shoulders back, your spine tall, and your chest forward. Good posture keeps you steady in the highest of heels.

4. Take a few steps. Now you're ready to walk! Take your first steps on a hard surface since carpet can throw off your balance.

What's In Store For you In Pointe Shoes?

Who is the most important person in a ballet store?

It is the one who can help you get exactly the right fit in pointe shoes. You already knew that.

If you have just started pointe work, or are hoping to, here is one thing you can do to strengthen your feet.

You use the floor as resistance in every tendu and degage you do.

You PRESS into the floor with the sole of your foot, every time you leave fifth or first position and stretch your foot into a tendu, degage, grande battement, or go through first in your ronde de jambe a terre.

You also PRESS through the metatarsals on to full pointe to the end of your tendu, degage or grande battement.

This will strengthen the sole of the foot, and the muscles under the metatarsals (toes) which will help you in pointe work.

It will also help you in jumps, lowering into a demi-plie with that cat-like quality, and avoid many injuries from landing well, when you are on a less-sprung floor.

So while the person at the ballet store is important, it is also important for you to realize that all your basic ballet work is preparation for your work in pointe shoes. Every small movement from a closed position to an open position is a chance to strengthen the sole of the foot. Pressure into the floor is like the resistance of a heavy weight. The harder you press, the heavier the weight.

Once you have started pointe work and have worn out a pair of pointe shoes, you wear them for soft shoes. Why? The shoe gives you more resistance every time you stretch, and that continues to strengthen the sole of the foot.

Sometimes when you wear the softened pointe shoes instead of soft shoes, you wobble when standing on one leg because of the extra height in the sole of pointe shoes. You can file this down with a wood file. It makes the sole flat on the floor, while not planing it down enough to get rid of that valuable extra resistance it gives.

And who thought you'd need a tool box too?

Relaxing the foot muscles is important. You can roll your foot over a tennis ball, but better yet use a rubber ball that has a little give.

Here's a stretch I learned from Deborah Vogel. With a soft rubber ball, kneel down on the floor and put the ball under one of your legs, under the shin. Let your weight press into the ball, inch by inch, and it will relax the tibial muscles. Go all the way down to the ankle area, kneading and stretching the muscles.

Then, put the ball under the top of the metatarsal area, and pressing into it, you will get a stretch down the top of the foot and over the ankle, increasing the curve of your point.

Remember, muscles are stronger and better toned when they get stretched properly, and relaxed fully, every day.

Pointe shoes make noise, so for that, among other reasons, the more control the better.

The upper body posture and control is part of all of this too - but the feet is where you meet the stage. I hope this helps.

1. Buy Bridal Shoes That Are Comfortable

Because you will most likely wear new bridal shoes, it is important that they are comfortable. The first day wearing any pair of shoes is not fun. When you try on the bridal shoes, make sure to walk around on a rug and take notice of any areas that pinch your feet or wear on a toe or piece of your foot.
